Question:

Moving to a new city?

My husband and I and our one year old live in superior, wisconsin. We really want to move to Colorado before Trey (our son) starts school, so within the next 3 years or so. Colorado from Wisconsin is a pretty big move, and we wanted to know how to go about doing this. How do you move to a new city? What do you have to do in order to get everything lined up? How much money should we have? etc. Any advise is welcome. Thanks.

  1. The first thing you need to do is secure a job.  Can either of you transfer to Colorado?  Do either of you have careers that are in demand?  Once you've lined up employment at least 1 of you will need to go there for a few days to find a place to live, set up utilities, and I'd suggest opening a checking account.  Give notice at your job, and at your apartment, or put your house on the market to sell.  When the time comes to move,  rent a truck, and ask family & friends to help you load things up. Hopefully a family member would be willing to go along to help with the baby and help move furniture in when you get there.  If you just have one car you can tow it behind the truck, but if you have 2 cars you'll have to tow one and drive the other so you'd really have to have someone with you to help. You'd have to have enough money to rent the truck, cover gas, hotel and food on the trip, deposits for utilities and housing.  Don't move until you have a job lined up so you won't have to wait long for a paycheck.  I know it sounds overwhelming, but people do it all the time.  My daughter moved from Dallas to Denver a few months after graduating from college.  My nephew recently moved from Dallas to Florida.  If you plan well it will go smoothly.  You're young -- be adventurous. Good luck to you.
