Moving to california, do I need to get my car and scooter CARB certified?

I am moving from Ohio to California. I heard that I might have to get a bunch of emissions tests done when I get there on my car and scooter. Can anyone tell me what I might have to do to be legal there? (I tried looking it up on Cali's .gov site but it was like reading stereo instructions in russian) Thanks in advance! :)

  1. When it's time to re-register your vehicles, then the DMV  will let you know.  Registration is based on value of your vehicle and maybe gas mileage (though that might only be on purchase registrations)  They use to make all out of state vehicles comply with Calif.'s emissions rules but I believe that was changed.

  2. If you are going to register your car in CA you will need to get a smog certificate.

Here is a link to the DMV faq for smog.

  3. you will have to register you vehicles, and you may have to pay a smog impact fee, depending upon the make and year of your vehicles...good luck, Cali has some of the most draconian and worthless vehicle registration rules in the world, and the dmv personnel are mostly the result of the state of cali hiring the mentally handicapped....good luck, sorry you have to live in the land of the fruits and nuts...and I am referring to their residents...

  4. call the CHP's office. they would at least point you in the right direction.

Did you go to the CA DMV website?

  5. Yes, you will need to bring them to shops that do smog checks. We moved to CA years ago and had to do that soon after we move.  Shops that are qualified to do this have signs that are easily seen.

About scooters, see the link below.

  6. The DMV site explains everything.  dmv.ca.gov

Basically, you have to register your car with CA plates within a certain number of days.  To do that, you need to get it inspected and present a smog certificate.  Most mechanics and gas stations can do this for you.

  7. Yes you will need to have a passing smog certificate for any vehicle older than 1974.  This will have to be re-certified every 2 years
