Moving to costa rica soon but scared?

well i hear that alot of people get robbed and killed ther and that ther san jose street very dangerous and somebody always gets high jacked so what do ido to stay safe over ther please help?

Costa Rica is such a beautifull country! I'm not even from there but I love it...

The robbery story it's told everytime you are heading to a Latin American country and true to be told.. that's just over reacting!!! It's all about being in the wrong place at the wrong time! Bad things can happen to you all over the world and as far as I know Latin America has a great number of friendly people!! It doesn't mean you don't have to take precautions but just don't over react.

Well, crimes are inevitable. It's always present wherever you are, wherever you go. And San Jose is not exempted on that. But still there are some places in Costa Rica which you can feel safe and secure. Moreover, there are hundred of reasons why most Americans chose to retire on this place. Be inform!

I have had nothing but wonderful experiences each & every time I travel back & forth to Costa Rica..I live in Florida...you can comment on the crime here in the states & there will ALWAYS be another horror story to TOP the one just told! All throughout the US crime is rampid...then the people here travel to countries like beautiful Costa Rica...& exxaggerate on stories of crime...Listen to those who know...the TICO people are wonderfully friendly & genuinely kind....I KNOW...I have met many many over the years & can hardly wait to return to my Tico friends! Soon I will live amongst Tico people & share their beautiful country. Tico people are of all kinds just like other areas of our world...there is crime everywhere, but in Costa Rica it is usually the petty theft of items that tourist leave in the open asking & offering temptation...far different from the rough busy cities in the US where a gun or weapon is usually the part of any & all crime, ending in loss of life for a few $$..Costa Rica is safer than you think...be practical...don't flaunt your money, jewelry, etc...act responsibly & don't ask for trouble. Common sense is all you need...& drop the 'fear' ...its pointless worry & totally unjustified...

Hi!

I´m a TICA (costa rican) and as in every country, CR has crime. BUT if you compare it with some cities from the US and other latin american countries, it´s a lot less.

If you stay away from dangerous places, like downtown San Jose after 7 pm, you won´t get robbed.

And from what I can tell, your English isn´t very good. I think you´re not American, I think you´re some guy trying to make CR sound like a horrible place to visit and live.

But if you are really moving to CR go to a real estate agency and ask for the best place to live.

I always felt safe there but I was with a tour group. I thought the people were very clean, friendly and proud. My son also went there are loved it and said the same thing. They are beautiful people, but like any city, you do have to keep your wits about you.

Costa Rica is not a scary place.  I have never met friendlier people.  Use your head and take local advice about where to avoid and you will be fine.  Take a little tour through East Los Angeles in California and you will learn to appreciate the fact that there are worse places than Costa Rica.  The people coming to America as tourists are the ones who are in danger!!!!!!

i am from Costa Rica, i live in California, in Hollywood, and let me tell you, Costa Rica is the safest country you can ever go to and live.

Do not believe everything you hear about how bad it is. It;s not. its very beautiful, peaceful,  but of course you are not going out by yourself in the middle of the night, that is trying to get in trouble in Costa Rica and anywhere in the world, you got to use your common sense too.

Hi! I'm tico (costa rican), and what you here are some exaggerations, as any other city on the world, crime is present, but San Jose or other CR cities are not very dangerous. People here are nice, but there also some people who get out of the line, because some of them steal but most of the people who have been stolen, it's because they are very trusted. I recommend you, no to show very luxurious stuff, because those things call the attention. Just follow your instinct, and be catious.

I have traveled literally everywhere in the USA and Canada as well as Costa Rica and the best I can describe it to anyone familiar with the USA is the "Midwest".  Ticas are much like small town / ranchers / farmers in our Midwest, "Salt of the earth" people.   I too had heard good and bad about C.R. before going there and the bad I heard was Bu!! S**t.  The Ticas are an awesome people and we made many friends there and are heading back in 25 days!  That said, there is a criminal element everywhere in the world so if you but yourself in a bad position I'm sure you can find problems.  Learn some Spanish or hook up with a local before going there that is bilingual and hire them as a "tour guide" of sorts.
