  1. I'd look around North London. Areas like Tottenham, Edmonton or Wood Green is pretty good, and when I was there, not too expensive.

  2. The best thing to do is look around the area you'll be working to start with, and then go outwards from there. This way you won't be trekking all across the city every day, which can take a long time & is stressful!

Very briefly (and based on my own experiences):

North London - some nice affordable places, good transport links

East London - not as bad as people make out, very friendly locals, very affordable to live in

West London - not such good transport links, accommodation is more expensive but some very nice areas

South London - more green & hilly, quiet streets, not so good for transport, especially late at night

There are good & bad estates in all parts of London, so always check out the surrounding area before making a decision (eg what is the walk to the station/bus stop like). Biggest thing really is to think about the people you live with, ie will they make you feel at home when you move to the big city. Typical prices for decent house/flat shares are from about £400 a month; to rent a whole flat would be from about £900.

Good luck and enjoy the city!!
