Moving to...........?

Australia !

Was wondering if there were any Aussies who could give me some advice or anyone who has done this themselves.

I have one year left at university (Warwick-UK) and my friend and I want to move to Australia for a year afterwards.

We know all about visas etc but we don't know about the experience! For example, do they make it hard for you to get a visa? Where is (i your opinion) the best place for renting somewhere to live. How are the costs with renting at the moment?

Things like this we don't know as we can only see it all from the outsiders perspective at the moment and it would really help getting the opinions and advice from you guys!

Thanks!

  1. i can't imagine why a visa ,etc ; would be a problem --- we'll take anyone ( lol ) but rental is a big issue here --- it is  through the roof --- as so to speak . and apparently nationwide .

i live in the whitsundays in queensland and it has always been dear to rent because of the locality --- but 4 - 500 $ a week is over the top .

you'll need to do your homework before you leave the old dart .

    good luck .

  2. I lived out there for 14 months (I'm from Middlesbrough UK), its an absolutely awesome place to live, are you planning on back packing or staying in 1 place all the time?

I did a bit of both, staying in Sydney for 4 months and Melbourne for 6, withthe rest moving around.  If you are getting a working travel visa (last for 1 year with the ability to extend for another year if you do 3 months fruit picking) then these are really easy to get.  I applied for 1 in my lunch break on line and it was granted by 3pm.  Dont bother with agencies just do it directly through the austrailian embassy (just seach for it on line).

best thing to do as far as accomodation goes is to book a week or 2 in a hostel for when you first get there, this will give you chance to get your bearings for the place and most have an advertising board that often has accomodation for rent on it including shared accomodation.  Price wise its cheaper than here but obviously depends where you are.

Good hostels are Wake up in Sydney (relatively expensive but is like the hilton of hostels), in Melbourne, All Nations central (dirt cheap and a run down but the people are really friendly) and base (more up market).  As long as it has a bar the hostel is likely to be ok (the bar is where everyone who isnt weird goes stay out of tv rooms a much as you can especially after dark!!).
