  1. Mowing often keeps weeds from evergoing to seed I use weed and feed with the highest numbers I can get all year even fall

  2. It is better to mow it to a higher height, but mow more often.  (i.e., do not cut it almost to the ground).  As for fertilizer, it really depends on where you are located.  A lot of counties (at least in Virginia) will do free soil sample tests, which will help you determine what type of fertilizer you need, and whether you should also add lime.  Good luck!

  3. In the spring, I mow real short for about a month to help get rid of all the dead grass from the year before.  As the summer temps rise, I raise the deck on my mower.  I live where it gets real hot in the summer, so the grass itself seems to do better when it's a little bit long.  In the winter I never use fertilizer.  I always concentrate on weed prevention like pre emergence and crab grass killer.  However,  A lot of people do use fertilizer.  Scott's is a good brand that I trust.

  4. I always mow my lawn as high as the mower will go (3-3-1/2") that helps the plant send down deeper roots and require less water.

It is also preferable (for the grass) to mow often enough to never cut more than a third of the growth. In the Spring, that can mean every 4 or 5 days!

Most commercial fertilizer manufacturers will have a formula designed for your area and that season.
