Question:

Mowing grass?

I have heard you should not mow wet grass after it rains. Does it hurt to mow grass in the early morning when there is dew making it wet? I have tried waiting until after the dew evaporates, but then it is getting hot to be in the sun. I'd like to have it moved in th early morning. Can the grass be cut then or not?

  1. Cutting your grass when it is wet will not hurt or damage the grass itself.  In fact, never cut your grass when it's the peak part of the day....like noon or in the afternoon when the sun is out and it's hot.  This will burn the grass where it has been cut and will damage it.  I always try to cut my grass in the evening....after dinner is a good time.  This allows the grass to "recover" if you will before the next day of sunlight and heat.  Cutting in the early morning is also fine.  The only down side to cutting wet grass or grass with a heavy dew is it tends to clump together a little.  It doesn't hurt anything, just doesn't look the best.  Also, remember to cut your grass no shorter than 3" and use a different pattern each time you cut it.  This helps to keep your grass green and healthy, plus reduces the amount of weeds that will take hold in the turf.  Oh.....almost forgot....keep the blade on  your mower sharp too!  You want to cut the blades of grass and not rip them.

  2. I don't hink it necessarily hurts the grass, although my father always said it did.  I don't think the grass cuts as cleanly when wet, which will give you an uneven mow.  I think the concern is that it will dull your mower blade faster, which is a real pain to resharpen by yourself.  If you have a standing or "walk-behind" mower and have a hilly yard (like I did when I was a kid), there is also a very significant concern about slipping and having your foot slip into the lawn mower blades (safety hazard).

Judging by all of the professional landscapers that start at the crack of dawn I don't think it hurts the grass, but they have all of the tools to resharpen their blades.

If you don't like mowing your yard when it's hot and would rather have it cut when it's hot, I'd find a neighborhood kid who needs a few extra bucks and pay them to do it (like I did when I was a kid).  You get to teach a lesson in economics and self-reliance at the same time!

  3. Yes, you can cut the grass early in the morning with dew on it....quite a few  do it as soon as it's day light

Yes cut it when you want too..............

you can even cut the grass after a rain....it's just sticks to everything...and is can get muddy.....and the tires can get in one spot and spin...

Do what you want to do....after all it is your grass

  4. The only downside to mowing when the grass is wet is that it sticks to the underside of the mower deck much more than it would if you cut it when the grass was dry. Also, if you cut it too short when it is wet, it can leave clumps and you have to pick them up or they can kill spots on your lawn.

  5. Yes, you can cut the grass earlier in the morning , the dew will not hurt the grass, but right after it rains it's not a good idea to mow, the grass will be cut uneven...Also you may root up the lawn
