Moyenne Corniche shell-shocked his opponents as he stormed through to win the Ebor Handicap at York
Trainer Brian Ellison, before the race did say both of his runners, Saptapadi and Moyenne Corniche, will wind up in the top in a field of 20 horses, and he has been spot on with his prediction as one of his runner, Moyenne Corniche, won the BETFRED Ebor
Heritage Handicap by a length over the Queen’s colt, Tactician.
On this particular occasion, trainer Brian Ellison has been as good as gold to the punters, as his brilliant 6-year-old chestnut gelding stole the show with his mesmerizing run and determination to win the richest European Handicap, while he was sent at
25 to 1 to win the race.
Roused by Dale Swift, the pair took on the marathon distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs and 19 other horses including his stable mate Saptapadi.
Moyenne Corniche had to face traffic in the begging and got held up at the rear, but made headway with 3 furlongs to go. With the field clearing out as the runners dispersed, Moyenne Corniche rode well under Dale Swift to gather lost ground.
He chased leader’s way before the final furlong, and in all the commotion Dale Swift switched his gelding on the right before entering the final furlong.
The pair stayed on strongly as the fended off solid challenges from Tactician and Investissement, and powered through to hit the wire before them.
Tactician was driven well by jockey Joseph O’Brien for trainer Michael Bell in the final furlong, but didn’t have enough legs to carry himself across Moyenne Corniche and finished second, kept on well towards the finish.
The six year old son of Selkirk, Moyenne Corniche had just won a maiden way back on 19 April, 2011 at Newbury and nothing after that until the huge York win, all thanks to trainer Brian Ellison who should be given a few more top horses.
The six-year-old was worth a mere £5,000 before the Ebor Handicap, but after winning the race, the gelding has increased his worth to a whopping £131,000 as he made a late run under Dale Swift to sweep the handicap.
On the other hand, his half brother Saptapadi rolled in to finish fifth. Sent at 15 to 2 Saptapadi was under jockey Kieren Fallon. The pair broke well from the gates and pushed along on the outer but suddenly slightly outpaced with over 2 furlongs to go.
The runner was one paced in the final furlong and never gave jockey Kieren Fallon enough pace to challenge and faded to fifth.
Dale Swift said about Moyenne Corniche after the race, that he was not too keen in the beginning and his gallop over the mile wasn’t too thrilling, but he settled nicely enough and got all the gaps he needed to win the race.
