The Nigerian International made his first appearance of the season against Newcastle United last Monday, coming on as a substitute for Jelavic in the closing stages of the first half.
With the Croatian International ruled out from action for up to 2 weeks due to a minor knee injury, Anichebe is expected to fill in his void, after his impressive performance against the Magpies.
The forward struck a goal in his side’s 2-2 draw, and also saw one of his attempts get wrongly ruled out by the linesman, with the ball having clearly crossed the goal line.
His brief cameo against the Toon won him the plaudits of his manager, who is now pondering over the option of including him in his starting line-up.
The 49-year old Scott believes that Jelavic’s injury has provided a golden opportunity to Anichebe to step up to the challenge, and stake his claim in the regular team.
He praised the 24-year old’s strong resolve and determination, and feels that the ongoing season could be the one in which the player makes his breakthrough.
“Victor knows himself that he has to start making a bigger impact. He senses he has to shake himself up,” he told the reporters in an interview.
“Victor’s work-rate and effort has improved. I’ve seen it in his training and in his pre-season. He has picked up and he knows that it’s a big part of what he has to do.”
Jelavic collided with the goal post on Monday, and hobbled off the field close to the halftime break.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c13019 had earlier revealed that the extent of his injury was minor, and the striker will make a full recovery in a couple of weeks.
His injury has been viewed by many as a big setback for the Toffees, since he is currently the spearhead of their attack.
Nonetheless, the Goodison Park boss was not too fazed by his absence, insisting that they have got significant firepower in their squad to cope with the predicament.
“We have other options down the middle. We can play Naismith through there, we came play Mirallas through there, we can play Anichebe through there,” he added.
