Everton manager, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 Moyes, was over the moon following his side’s 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic in a league match at Goodison Park on Boxing Day.
The Toffees looked in total control going into the closing stages of the game, after claiming a two goal lead. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Phil-Jagielka-c29902 apparently sealed the affair with his 77th minute
scalp.
However, the visitors planted a grain of doubt in the minds of the home fans, as Arouna Kone made the most of an error in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c13019’s backline to halve the deficit. Despite a late onslaught from the visitors, David Moyes’ unit defended resolutely to grind
out all three points.
The win kept the Toffees at the fifth place in the Premier League’s pecking order, and came at the back of their 2-1 triumph over West Ham United last week. They now have 33 points from their 19 games, and are behind fourth-ranked Tottenham Hotspur on the
virtue of goal difference.
After having played multiple draws this campaign, Moyes was pleased to see his side return to winning ways.
The 49-year old admitted that they were forced to draw on to their defences at the face of a late charge from the Latics, but lauded the way the defence dealt with the situation.
“I've said to the players now we've won two from two and if you're taking six points from 12 over the Christmas period, some folk might deem that to be good,” he told the reporters.
“Now we've got to try and take some more if we can. We'll try and keep it going. We needed it today. We've drawn a lot of these games recently and you could have said in the last five or 10 minutes today that it could have been tight. But we had one or two
other opportunities to score before we did do to finish it off.”
Everton narrowly missed out on a Europa League berth last term, but are strong contenders to finish inside the top six this time around. The Merseyside team are renowned to put up a much better show in the second half of the season.
