Mozambique wins gold in CAVB Continental Cup Zonal Phase Pool E final – Volleyball news
The CAVB Continental Cup Zonal Phase Pool E matches closed today, May 19th, in Mozambique, Maputo, as the hosts won the finals against Mauritius.
The tournament also acts as an Olympics qualifying round and a chance for the winners to make their place in next year’s mega event. In a total of three matches that took seven sets to reach its end, the home team of Mozambique was able to hand out a defeat
to Mauritius.
On the other hand, the men’s final took place between the home team of Mozambique and South Africa. Unlike their female counter parts, the men could not muster a win and lost to the South Africans.
The Mozambique female team consisted of Rezia and Amelia Cumdi, both of whom are sisters. Whereas the Mauritius squad featured Natasha Rigobert and Elodie Li Yak. The first match of the three game final was played by Majorie Nadal and Prisca Sarungen. Mozambique
won the first match by 2-0 whereas it lost the second one by 2-1. However, the Mozambique players came back with a strong performance in the third match to secure a win at 2-1.
In the first match of the final, Mozambique was able to completely dominate their rivals. Mauritius could not match the speed and stamina of the Mozambique players and lost the first set by a considerable margin. Rather than stepping up their game and giving
a challenge to the Mozambique duo, the Mauritius players under performed in the second set as well and gave away the set to Mozambique easily. The score board showed a first match victory at the following final set scores: 21-16 and 21-15.
The second match of the final took place against Rigobert and Li Yak, the duo which took part in the FIVB Swatch World Championships earlier. The Mauritius team looked confident as they stepped onto the sand. Despite the fact that they lost the first set
of the match by quite a margin to the Mozambique duo, they rallied together in the second set in order to bag a win. The momentum generated by winning the second set of the game led Mauritius all the way through to win the third set as well. However, Mozambique
did not go down without putting up a significant fight. By the time that the final was tied at 1-1, the final set scores in the second match stood at: 10-21, 21-17 and 15-12.
The first set of the third match saw Mozambique lose to the Mauritius side at 8-21 but the y stepped up their game to bag a win in the second set at 21-19. With the gold medal dependent on third set of the third match, Mozambique was able to make a timely
win at 16-14.
The bronze of the women’s tournament went to the South African team.
