  1. If you have a pop3 email account, ask the service provider for the server names. GMail and Yahoo mail premium usually offer pop3 service as a bonus feature so go to their settings page and enable pop3 email. When you do, these pages will also contain detailed instructions for configuring elaim clients (e.g. Thunderbird, Outlook, Outlook Express etc.)

  2. Keep in mind that Thunderbird is only used to access e-mail accounts.  It does not provide an e-mail account to you.

Not all types of accounts provide SMTP and POP3 access.  Many web mail accounts, like Yahoo Mail, want you to pay for that access.  Otherwise, you must use their web interface (so they can show you advertisements at the same time.)

If you have an account that supports POP3/SMTP and/or IMAP, then you must get that information from your account provider, for example your Internet Service Provider or your company.

As a side note, there are slightly advanced tricks for accessing web based e-mail accounts from the most popular providers, such as this Thunderbird plugin extension http://savanttools.com/redir/webmail.moz...
