Mp3 memory expansion

I recently purchased a Wharfedale mp3 player with an internal memory of 4gb. There is extra storage in the form of a mini SD card, up to 2 gb, according to the supplied manual. Is there any reason why it would be limited to 2gb? I have seen mini SD cards with a bigger memory than this but do not want to purchase one if they are not compatible.Many regards
