1. depends on where you are. average in europe isn't the same as average in the US. generally, less than 30 mpg is considered pathetic nowadays, for most conventional cars.

there are a lot of websites that compare mpg between vehicles, that can be easily googled with a suitable search phrase like 'fuel consumption comparison' - which i did recently since i was shopping for a car. the US EPA does a comparison for models available in the US.

diesel cars, esp. european ones, can get really good mpg. the diesel blue motion is so far the car with the best mpg in the market, >60 mpg.

note that usually actual fuel consumption is a bit more than the specifications, due to actual driving conditions may not be similar to the testing, and since there isn't really any standardisation between companies on this, f.c. in specs may not be exactly comparable. however, there are also sites (relatively searchable on the web) that collate actual data from drivers, correcting for various factors, which should give you some idea of a particular car model's actual f.c.

  2. Now you're getting it, Gaby. The environmentalists have contributed to global warming because of air quality concerns.

Haley, it's fun to just go to auto manufacturer sites to compare MPG. I was just on Ford to look at the Escape Hybrid as compared to the regular Escape.

  3. The average MPG depends on which hybrid - there are many (from Toyota, Ford, ...even Cadillac is supposed to have one for model year 2009 if you can believe the auto show ads).

Here's a bit of data from the 'official' US fuel economy page.

The Toyota Camry comes in a standard and a hybrid model. The Hybrid is rated at 34 MPG, while the regular version gets 25 MPG.

The Ford Escape Hybrid is rated at 32 MPG, while the normal version gets about 24.

For some reason, drivers of hybrids report mileage that is a bit higher than these government estimates, but non-hybrid drivers generally report lower MPG than estimated.

There are other hybrids (such as the Prius, and the discontinued Honda Insight) that don't have a non-hybrid model to compare them to.

  4. Mpg is part of the picture.

Consider also around town driving. Sitting stationary with the gas motor running returns 0 mpg, and I understand the hybrids also put energy back into the battery when braking, slowing down or going downhill.

Be carefull of the european mpg numbers, while the mile is the same distance the gallon is a bit bigger. The US gal is 3.75 litres and the imperial gal is 4.5 litres.

  5. Compare like with like, and remember US gallons are smaller than everyone else.

so the VW giving 60mpg is EU figure. the 45mpg Prius equates to 65mpg EU test data, real world drivers will get between 50&60mpg. Plus the Prius is a large 5seater automatic.

  6. There are a lot of hybrids and a lot of gas cars. Which are you asking about?

The Prius, for example gets about 47 mpg. The Honda Civic hybrid gets 44 mpg. There are some bigger SUVs that get far lower mileage, such as the Chevy Tahoe hybrid which only gets around 20 mpg.

There are big gas cars like the Hummer H2 which only gets like 10 mpg, and there are little gas cars like the Yaris that gets 32 mpg and Mini Cooper HT that gets 36 mpg.

Generally a hybrid will get 25-35% better fuel economy than a similar gas car.

  7. I don't know the averages. The best Hybrid gets 45 MPG. The best Gas gets about 38-40 in the US, and maybe 42-45 in Europe. Europe has many Diesels which get 50MPG, and can burn Bio Diesel where available. Soon we should see Hybrid Diesels that get 60-70.

VW now has a Diesel (VW POLO) that gets over 60MPG. There are others as well. Can't get any good cars in US. I am told it is our emissions limits that are the primary problem. Sound silly to me. We must add to global warming to meet our emissions standards?????
