Mr. Commons feeling better, pointed at the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on 27 August
The 3-year-old Artie Schiller colt, Mr. Commons have recovered from his sore foot and is now back in training for the $200,000 Del Mar Mile. The 3-year-old will be up against older horses and the predicament could get a little tough on 27 August, 2011.
Mr. Commons was supposed to go for the Grade 2 La Jolla Handicap, but he was rested by his connections to heal up his sore foot and target the Del Mar Mile instead risking an injury and going for both events.
Winner of the Oceanside Stakes on grass at Del Mar, a race which is also run over at a distance of 1 mile, Mr. Commons hasn’t run since his win on 20 July, 2011. But the training sessions are going along fine as the son of Artie Schiller breezed a five furlong
long distance in a minute on 14 August.
On 17 August, the colt returned to the track to get used to the surroundings for a jog said trainer John Shirreffs.
After Mr. Commons win in the Oceanside Stakes, which is of a mile and a win in an allowance race earlier this year which was also run over at a distance of 1 mile, it is not hard to assess the true distance of Mr. Commons is a mile.
The decision between the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile and the $250,000 Del Mar Derby run over at a distance of 1 1/8 miles was an easy one.
He was pointed towards the mile because of his history to do well on a mile and another thing. If the colt does well in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile then there are opportunities and possibilities galore for the connections.
The lucrative opportunity is the Breeders’ Cup this fall, if the colt goes on to win the Grade 2 event at Del Mar. It’s not for sure if he is exclusively a mile horse, but he has shown he can run the distance comfortably and successfully.
Mr. Commons so far has 3 wins from 6 starts with career earnings of $253,660.
