Mr. Commons part of an eleven horse field for the American Handicap
The 4-year-old St. George Farm Racing owned and bred colt, Mr. Commons last raced on 3 March, 2012, in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita and finished a solid second to winner, Willyconker.
John A. Shirreffs trained Mr. Commons is making his return to the races after a layoff of nearly three months to head 10 other horses participating in the Grade 2, $150,000 American Handicap over the Betfair Hollywood Park’s turf on 26 May, 2012.
The mile long race is exclusive for 3-year-olds and above colts and geldings, as Mr. Commons will look to solidify his status as a miler, after missing the opportunity to go 2 up for the season in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile when he finished second as a 4 to
5 choice.
Prior to the Kilroe Mile, the Artie Schiller colt kicked off his season and the 2012 Santa Anita meet with the win in the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes also at a mile on 4 February, 2012, when he downed Willyconker in second and Massone in third with the winning
time of 1 minute and 33.41 seconds.
Out of mare Joustabout by Apalachee, Mr. Commons broke his maiden on turf, but switched to dirt as a three-year-old, and finished third in the Santa Anita Derby and eighth in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes.
Shirreffs decided to switch Mr. Commons to turf after his disappointing run in the Preakness Stakes, and since then he has not finished worse than second in six of seven starts.
His only blemish was in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile last fall at Churchill Downs, where it looked he never showed up in the race and got well beaten by, Court Vision.
Mr. Commons capped off his last season with a win in the Grade 2 Sir Beaufort Stakes over the unique hillside turf course of Santa Anita Park at about a mile under his trusted jockey, Mike Smith, who guided the colt to finish over the highly regarded, Ultimate
Eagle.
The only threat to Mr. Commons’ victory in the American Handicap will come from, Compari, who is coming off a third place finish in the Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes.
