Mr. Commons to take on the Kilroe Mile lineup at Santa Anita
If only Mr. Commons had a good trip at Churchill Downs last fall in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile on turf, then all the noise would translate into, the nation’s best turf miler going for the crown in the Grade 1, $300,000 Kilroe Mile, which is to
be held at Santa Anita’s turf course on the Santa Anita Handicap undercard on 3 March, 2012.
Though he made a mess of it on 5 November, 2011, but his ability and character weighs heavy after he redeemed himself to still be in the conversation after a win in the Grade 2 Sir Beaufort Stakes and then recently winning the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes,
both at a mile and both at Santa Anita’s unique hillside turf course.
All this momentum cannot be ignored, and on the flipside the Artie Schiller colt is propelled on the winning prices once again for the Kilroe Mile. Being a full on turf rider of the nation is a big reputation to hold, but he certainly solidified his
position as a best turf miler on the West Coast.
That’s saying something for a 4-year-old colt, who was struggling to turn in a winner before the Breeders’ Cup with only 3 wins in 8 starts, and that included a maiden special weight race win at second asking, and an allowance race and a stakes win
at Del Mar in the Oceanside Stakes on 20 July, 2011.
He was part of the Triple Crown, when he ran in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes last year at about 1 3/16 miles on dirt, but finished a distant eighth to winner Shackleford.
John A. Shirreffs trained colt, did flash his brilliance time and again leading up to the Breeders’ Cup, when he turned in two back to back second place finishes in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile Handicap and then the Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile at Santa Anita
Park.
To be fair to the colt, he was then at that point realizing, how good he is at turf, and same goes to his connections, and once they understood the ability is amplified on turf, and then it was grass all the way for Mr. Commons.
