Much anticipated rematch between Eden’s Moon and Reneesgotzip to take place in the Santa Anita Oaks
The Grade 1, $300,000 Santa Anita Oaks has drawn a small yet competitive field to run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles on the Santa Anita Park’s dirt course on 31 March, 2012. The race is exclusive for 3-year-old fillies.
The highlight of the race will be the rematch between Kaleem Shah owned and Bob Baffert trained, Eden’s Moon, and trained by Peter Miller for Lanni Family Trust owned 3-year-old filly, Reneesgotzip.
The two met previously in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes at about a mile on 3 March, 2012, over the Santa Anita Park’s dirt course, as Eden’s Moon edged past Reneesgotzip in the deep stretch to take the race with the winning time of 1 minute and 35.27 seconds.
It was an impressive performance by the Florida bred daughter of Malibu Moon, out of mare Eden’s Causeway by Giant’s Causeway, as Eden’s Moon under jockey Martin Garcia set slightly off the pace because she had to match the fast fractions carved by Reneesgotzip
in the early stages of the race.
She followed the leader, who downed the first quarter of a mile in 23.16 seconds, and half a mile in 46.47 seconds, but when the two rampant fillies parted from the rest of the pack after swinging off the far turn, Eden’s Moon big engine came into play as
she zipped past Reneesgotzip in the final sew strides and posted a 3 ¼ lengths convincing win.
It was Eden’s Moon stakes debut, and she defeated the Grade 2 Santa Ynez Stakes winner, who was undefeated prior to the Las Virgenes Stakes.
Eden’s Moon was coming off a maiden special weight win at about a mile also at Santa Anita Park on 8 January, 2012. It was her second attempt at the maidens, as she failed to break it the first time when she finished second to, Reneesgotzip, going 6 furlongs
over the Hollywood Park’s cushion track.
The Kentucky bred City Zip filly, Reneesgotzip will have a change in rider as Corey Nakatani at Dubai for the Super Saturday, Peter Miller called Garrett Gomez, and the pair will break from post number 2, and Reneesgotzip will be wearing blinkers in the
Santa Anita Oaks.
Eden’s Moon will retain her ride with Martin Garcia, as the couple got the rail in Santa Anita Oaks.
