Currently the exchange rate is CNY6.9240/$.  This exchange rate is quoted in dollars.  This means that for every US dollar, you get 6.92 yuan.

If you have dollars and you want to know what it is in yuan, you just multiply the number of dollars by 6.9420.  For example, if you have $250, and you want to know how much that is in yuan, you would:

$250 x 6.9240 = CNY1731.00

If you have yuan and want to know what it is in dollars, you do the reverse and divide the amount in yuan by the exchange rate:

CNY1731.00 / 6.9240 = $250
