Much needed Andy Pettitte is not currently in NY Yankees’ plans
The New York Yankees made a risky decision in the off-season period and with their hopes dampened by the failure of those choices it seems drastic measures need to be taken. The team had given their top man, General Manager Brian
Cashman, all the power to bring in Cliff Lee. Unfortunately, that was not going to be the case as the veteran opted to declare his choice of team in the middle of December.
The Yankees were heartbroken by the eventual confirmation on Lee’s move to the Philadelphia Phillies. Now, after the saga has long ended, the Yanks have a hard task to strengthen their pitching rotation with the existing pitchers.
Javier Vazquez and Dustin Moseley were shipped out and that seems to cause a problem in the boardroom meetings these days. Brian Cashman has limited choices in the free agency and the only useful crop of people can come straight in from the minor leagues.
Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova are set to join A. J. Burnett and Carsten Charles Sabathia on the rotation.
Nevertheless, there is a fifth spot available and while management is scanning the current market for a useful decision, the prospect of Andy Pettitte returning to the club for one more year seems to be in the spotlight. Brian
Cashman was willing to comment on the veteran ball thrower, recently.
"Right now, Andy is leaning toward retirement," General Manager Cashman said.
"He has not currently decided he wants to pursue playing next year. He wanted to make sure that we were not being held up. We need to do our business as though he's not playing."
"There's no official announcement that he's retired, but I can tell you he's not officially in play," Brian Cashman said.
"We're obviously focused on the available markets to us and those players on the free-agent market and trade market that will be available. Andy currently is not one of those guys. If he chooses to be, obviously he knows we'd love to talk to him."
Pettitte is one of the longest serving Yankees players in the club’s history. His return, in many supporters’ eyes, is being looked upon as a dream return. To summarize the need in the roster, Andy has the potential to drive the
club back to the driving seat in the American League. The only question is whether the player will take another bite at an opportunity or not.
