Question:

Much needed help with Palmetto bugs

I recently moved to south west florida and have had a huge problem with palmetto bugs in my apt. I have had multiple meetings with the rental office and have been told that it is controllable. They have had the apt sprayed by a bug company 5 times in 4 weeks. I have roach traps out and have gone through a few cans of raid. They just keep on coming. I have killed probably 10 in the last 2 days. Am I overreacting about this? How many is too many?

  2. "Palmetto bugs" are the large outdoor roaches that find their way inside usually when the population next to the structure is building up. The apartment pest control service probably chose the lowest bidder for the work and they come inside with the hand sprayer hitting the corners and plumbing areas. This for the most part won't stop what you are seeing.  The exterior of the building needs to have a barrier placed around it, a liquid treatment with their power sprayer would be the quickest results.  You may need to make sure that the weather stripping from the doors are tight keeping the insects out...you may want to pick up some of the do it yourself type spray such as "Home defense" and apply it at the thresholds of the exterior doors and where the plumbing pipes enter through the walls. Another common name for this roach is "water bug" If the structure is an pier and beams foundation making sure there is no water issues underneath would be in order, but if this was the case you probably would be seeing the various size roaches not just the large adults.

on the article that was posted  by the Beaufort gazette.  If they are going to write about an outdoor roach they should of at least used a picture from an out door roach, not the smaller "kitchen roach"  :)
