  1. I believe it was against Trevor Berbick in December 1981.  Ali lost a 10 round decision.

  2. Thumbs up to Tornado,  It was a loss to Berbick by decision with Ali sadly past his prime.

  3. Right on Tornado.  I was surprised ALI chose to fight a HULK like Berbick.  The man was strong as an ox.  He was the one who broke Larry Holmes' KO streak of title defenses.

ALI actually performed better against Berbick than he did the previous year against Larry Holmes.  Of course Larry is a much better fighter than Berbick but ALI was also not drained from Thyular  (sp), as he was in the Holmes fight.  It's easy to see that ALI didn't even sweat in the early going of the fight.  As great as Larry Holmes is,  a sub-par ALI could always go the distance with him, under normal circumstances.  I had known that Holmes could beat ALI for a long time, at least since the second Spinks fight in 78.  I felt that Holmes would just be too young, strong and fast.  ALI's timing was off by that time.   Had he not used Thyular, he would have gone the distance and lost a decision.

That drug leaves you dehydrated.  That's why ALI had NOTHING going in.  Some tried to call the fight off before it began but Don King wouldn't allow it.  Forget a man's life,  he wanted the money,  as if he needed it.

Thomas Hearns was one of ALI's sparring partners for the Berbick fight.  ALI was attempting to get a fight with then WBA Champion Mike Weaver but that fell through so he took the Berbick fight in an attempt to earn another title shot.   The loss was a blessing as he didn't get seriously hurt but learned that it was over.

  5. Ali's last fight was December 11, 1981 against Trevor Berbick in the Bahamas.  By this time, Ali was well past his prime and he had little to offer.  Berbick won a unanimous 10 round decision.

Berbick is most remembered for being the man that Tyson beat for his first title, when he became the youngest heavyweight champion in history.  Tyson dropped Berbick in the 2nd round and Berbick tried to get up and fell back down twice.
