Muhammed Lawal still fighting against staph infection – UFC News
Muhammed Lawal, ‘King Mo’, is currently going through a rough patch as he is fighting hard to remove infectious matter from his knee that underwent its seventh surgery on this Sunday.
In particular, staph infection is causing the fighter trouble. He underwent ACL surgery last month after which the staph infection developed. As of now, the infection has gone so severe that he might lose his leg. On this, Lawal iterated, “I'm just trying
to stay positive and hoping this medicine works. If this medicine works, I can't wait to get back in the cage.”
Previously, Lawal was on 24 hours administered antibiotics but now he has been shifted to antibiotics that are administered twice a day. The antibiotics are administered through a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC).
The condition started when Lawal tore his ACL while preparing to fight Lorenz Larkin at ‘Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine’. He was taken to the hospital where he went through a surgery four days later. The surgery, which was meant to rectify the condition,
has nearly caused him his leg. After the surgery to date, he has gone through several knee surgeries to get rid of the staph infection that spread 12 days after the surgery. The infection still exists in the knee and Lawal is scheduled to see the doctor tomorrow
again to see if the infection is reducing or not.

It should be noted here that staph infection is one of the most common forms of infections MMA fighters receive. The grappling involved in the sport puts the knees at high risk due to which this infection develops. Also, this is not the first time Lawal is
suffering through this condition. It happened with him previously as well in his elbow and face in 2006 and 2007.
On his health, Lawal iterated, “I naturally have a low white-blood-cell count, which most black athletes do, and I guess that with the anesthesia made my system worse. They say anaesthesiology helps cause infection because it lowers your white-blood-cell
count and your immune system."
For now, Lawal is trying his best to recover but it seems like this time he is in for long.
