  1. To the best of my knowledge, Cassius Clay, aka Muhammed Ali, is from the good ol' U S of A. (TN, I think) Just like many of the black people, he may claim to be African American but, he isn't.

Many of the black people cannot trace their heritage to Africa.  A lot of them are from Jamaica or, Haiti or the Domincan Republic, not Africa.  Slave trading came from many parts of the globe, not just Africa.  In order to claim a foreign country as home, a person has to be a direct descendant of parents who are direct descendants of parents who are direct descendants and so on back about 4 or 5 generations.  Four or five generations will not take many of our current black population back to the Civil War.  So, they are just plain black Americans.  Sorry if this is not what you are expecting.

I can claim to be European American if I choose.  But, it will not get me any special privileges.

There are many non-blacks in our country that have come from Africa.  Why would they not also be referred to as African Americans just because they are not black?

  2. Liberia on his mothers side.

Also, around the year 1855, a man and a woman who were both freed slaves, originally from Liberia, purchased land in or around Duck l**k Creek, Logan, Kentucky. The two married, raised a family, and farmed the land. These free blacks went by the name, Morehead, the name of white slave owners of the area.
