Newbie at this. I want to place bark mulch around my patio because the dogs have turned my yard to dirt. What do I place around the mulch to hold it in the patio area? Otherwise, it will end up all over the yard, right? Any other tips? thanks.

  1. You could also put pressure-treated wood in as an edging.  I'd go with 2X6 boards, put in vertically, leaving an inch or so sticking up.  This will not only keep the mulch in, but keep the grass out of the mulched area, since grass roots won't go under the wood that deep.

  2. There are several different types of edging that you can use.  They can be the very simple black plastic ones or the kind that looks like a little picket fence that you just hammer into that ground.  You can also do very pretty stone or brick edging, it depends on what you want.  Check out the ones at your local hardware/landscape supply store.
