Bayern Munich and Fort Lauderdale Strikers legend Gerd Muller has appreciated the efforts of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lionel-Messi-c22296 for breaking his goalscoring record, but insisted that he might have bagged more goals against present
day defences. He is extremely happy for the 25-year-old on the completion of this fantastic achievement.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 attacker levelled the former star player’s tally of 85 strikes in a calendar year against Betis over the weekend, and then grabbed another goal to surpass the record with the help of an Andres Iniesta assist. He now
has 86 goals to his name in 2012 and can get a few more in the remaining games of the year.
As a result, the former striker hailed Messi’s heroics but claimed that the forwards have an advantage in present day football to score more goals. The 67-year-old stated that the Barca man is worthy of the honour. He suggested
that his feat of registering 85 goals in 60 matches was not broken for 40 years.
"He deserves to supersede me. With the defences as they are [in modern times], people would score more," he was quoted as saying in an interview.
However, the best player on the planet has surpassed it and the former Der FCB frontman is glad for the youngster as he is a tremendous football player.
"My record stood for 40 years - 85 goals in 60 games - and now the best player in the world has broken it, and I'm delighted for him. He is an incredible player, gigantic," he added.
"He's such a nice and modest professional and I hope he gets one or two more goals in 2012 and that he can then hold onto the record for the next 40 years,” he finally concluded.
Muller said that Messi is a very humble person and is a role model for all footballers. He conceded that he wants the attacker to notch up a couple more goals and retain the record for at least 40 years from now.
