Felt I needed to edit yet again. May be a record. I wanted you, Leigh, to know I gave you thumbs up because that is the answer I was looking for. Collecting books is one of the answers I was expecting to recieve. I was only hoping for the reason? I would appreciate the reason and do not think it unreasonable to expect anything borrowed..returned, just wondered why?. I do have some books I keep(my fav author) I wondered if that was the only reason or if other people have dif. reasons for saving. Actually most of the books I read are from the library. I love Elmore Leonard, yet have never bought any of his books (geuss I prob should to support him), but I just check them out and return. I have had to pay for a book before that I lost, I suppose that is the same with borrowing. All I can say in my defense is....again....no big deal. Just was looking for specific reasons people keep books. Got a lot more than I bargained for, but I'm elated to know books mean so much to many.

  1. Yes you should probably spring for a new one- and next time just say no! I understand you didn't ask to borrow it but you also didn't decline-- which you could've done in a 'nice' way.  your attitude kinda stinks- "if it were mine I would've said don't worry about it"?? Aren't you the great friend! Did your friend ask you to replace it? if so, it was probably important to him/her, I'm sure there is some item that is important to you that I would find insignificant but my feelings don't lessen the value. If he/she didn't ask you to replace it then your attitude REALLY stinks- and you already knew when you typed this question what you needed to do.  Did you ever think that maybe your friend just thought it was something you would really dig, try to be a little more considerate- it will get you alot further in life!

Don't be mad at me sweetie- I did answer your question- buy a new one-- the first sentence!  I didn't "go on a tirade about something else"- maybe you should actually read it!  I didn't answer you about buying a used one on Amazon because you need to step up and buy a new one- not only do you sound like an inconsiderate B*tch your reply to me through my question about real estate lets me know you are a selfish, irresponsible & part illiterate B! You shouldn't ask if you don't want to hear the answers- how about this--- go buy a used one, use amazon, don't worry about how your friend feels- it's all about you and what's best and easiest for you! Happy B???

    Thanks

  2. buy a new one and apologise for ruining the old one and explain that you looked for a book with the same cover but couldn't find it.  I'm sure your friend won't mind.

  3. What does it matter if they offered it to you or you asked for it?  Did they force it on you?  Did they make you take it?  If you took it willingly, that means you're responsible for it.  As another responder said only get them a used copy if it's in good condition.  If you can't figure out which cover the replacement should have, then call them up, explain the situation and ask.  And you should get them a replacement even if they tell you not to.  And don't allow them to offer you any more books until you learn some respect for other people's possessions.

    EDIT:

It hit a nerve because you seemed to think you owed them no consideration just because you didn't request the book.  You should treat your friend's property just as well either way.  If you ruin someone else's property out of carelessness then you replace it.

Books are expensive.  People who don't like to keep read books will usually get them from the library.  Many people care very much about their books.  I gave up having a nice collection a long time ago, because of the circumstances of my life.  But both of my parents have extensive book collections, full of books they have already read.  It's really nice to have.  You'd have to love books to understand.

  4. You should buy a used book to replace it only if it's in good condition.  No writing on or in it, no torn pages.

If it's not a classic, it's probably not that much more expensive to just buy a new one.

Without knowing the book in question, I can't provide a link to the one with the cover you want.  All I can suggest is to try to find the ISBN for the one with the cover you need, and look that number up on Amazon.

    Good luck!

  5. Maybe its not so much whether they read it or not but possibly that they was trusting you with part of their property... and you ruined it.  I don't think that you should replace it with a used book... but a new one. I know its cheaper that way but hey maybe that book was important to them for some reason or another (someone special gave it to them or they really love the book or a memory was attached, etc.). So it's really the least you could do. As for the Amazon thing.. I have no idea I don't use that site.
