Question:

Multichannel input from speaker jack output?

I have a 5.1 dvd player that just has the connectors on the back to hook up the speakers (no audio out).

I just bought an A/V receiver and I want to hook the dvd player up to it. I think I can connect the speaker outputs on the dvd player to the multichannel input on the receiver, but do I need to use a line output converter so that the levels will be right going into the receiver?

  1. Your 5.1 DVD player appears like a single box solution (Home Theater in a Box) since you can directly connect speakers to it. It has a built in decoder and amplifier. Why do you want to connect your receiver to it?

You require line level connections to connect your receiver and your DVD player.

Another option is to use the headphone out socket (if it's there on your DVD player) and connect it to left/right analogue inputs. This is not a recommended way to connect. It can cause a lot of distortion, problems with your equipment and obviously you'll no longer get Dolby Digital or DTS !
