  1. There are also many VoIP services that emulate multi-line operation to your single-line VoIP connection.

The services that I use allow me to configure my user account DashBoard to handle incoming calls according to how I configure it to do so.

This isn't necessarily multi-line operation, but it is allowing me to make the determination as to how calls are handled.

For example, I can configure my line to direct all income calls to Voice-Mail.

Or, I can configure my VoIP line to send calls to Voice-Mail only when my line is busy, or unavailable.

There is also a VoIP service called GrandCentral (which I also have) that allows me to pre-screen incoming calls and to accept the incoming call or have the call redirected to the GC Voice-Mail system.

Again, these examples aren't multi-line operation, but is more about call handling and screening.

  2. Multiline operation is where a phone system has multiple incoming lines.  Business phone systems will handle as many lines as they have interface cards to do so.  Residential phones sometimes handle 2 lines with 2-line phones if you have 2 lines from your phone company.  If you have a business phone system, it may be possible to send a call to the answering machine, or voice mail, simply by pressing a button, or it could be automatic.  It depends on the capability of the phone system.  There are 2-line answering machines which would give residential users that capacity as well, but 2-line phones and 2-line answering machines usually work independently, thus not giving the user the ability to transfer the call to the answering machine.  They could only wait until the answering machine answered.
