Question:

Multiple Boom Mics Used in Film?

I am trying to make an independent film and am in the process of buying audio equipment. I noticed in many films they have multiple boom mics over the actors. My camera only has 1 microphone jack. Is it possible to buy a jack splitter so I can record two pieces of audio from 2 different mics? Thank you.

  1. NO!! When you use boom mics they are recording the audio separately from the camera. You sync the sound in post production.

  2. I have a miniture mixer with my miniDV recorder so that i can use 3 xlr mic inputs and pan them to right/left channel. Small portable battery operated mixers can be used when you need multiple mics, 4 and 6 channel are common. When i did recording for public radio events, a small Shure mixer with about 6 inputs was used and fed to a portable MD recorder. When you have a crew working the filming, having several people for just the audio greatly improves quality.
