Question:

Multiple Routers Sharing One Broadband Internet?

I have Mediacom Broadband Internet and I want a router to branch off of the primary router. I have a 75 foot Cat5e cable running from the main house to my trailer. I want to be able to hook into my router via wired and wireless and have it link to the primary router to share Internet. I want to do this so I don't have to run multiple long lengths of Cat5 for more computers and the fact that the main router's WLAN signal doesn't reach my trailer. If there is an easier way of doing this rather then having two routers then please tell me. Bellow is my desired configuration. I believe a tree topology is what I'm going for.

Cable Modem <=> Netgear WGT634 v3 <=> Linksys WRT54GS v7.2 <=> My Computer (Wired) and Laptop (Wireless)

  1. You can do this quite easy. Just make sure the second router is using a different IP scheme. For example, if your primary router is using 192.168.1.X, use 192.168.0.X

    If Internet is all you want from this then plug the CAT5 cable in to the internet port of your second router. If you want to access your company network then things get a little more complicated and you will have to setup a static route.
