Multiple Stakes winner, Battle of Hastings, recovering from his condylar fracture surgery on May 8
The Mike House owned colt who suffered from a condylar fracture in his right front leg in the May 7th Woodford Reserve Classic, underwent a surgery for his injured leg on May 8th. He came out of the surgery well, which was done by Dr.
Larry Bramlage.
Dr Larry Bramlage also treated Archarcharch. Archarcharch had a successful surgery but his racing career was terminated after the procedure.
The injury sustained by Battle of Hastings was inside the condyle of his right foreleg. Bramlage commented about the colt’s condition, saying, “His surgery went great, it required a plate, but he's also sound and walking around his stall today”. The Equine
surgeon also said that the colt will be able to make a full recovery.
His trainer, Gregory Fox, voiced his opinion regarding the colt’s condition, saying, “Following the surgery, it’s truly a masterpiece, the fracture line, you can’t even see it now. It’s a great testament to everyone’s professionalism from start to finish.
He’s a great patient. I just left him and he’s walking around the stall as if nothing happened; it’s incredible”.
Battle of Hastings got injured while he was about to finish the turf race which was one of the Kentucky Derby Undercards.
His jockey, Joel Rosario, pulled the colt out as soon as he realized something was wrong. Rosario also lauded the fast response and help he received from the Churchill outriders and onsite veterinarians.
The colt was X-rayed to determine the nature of his injury. Before being sent to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, his injury was stabilized. His trainer also reported that his radiographs were immediately sent to Dr Bramlage so that he could evaluate the
extent of the injury as soon as possible.
The 5-year-old gelding has won 7 of his 26 starts and his earnings compound to $1, 367,116.
Whether the colt will race again or not cannot be confirmed as yet. It is contingent upon the extent of recovery of his leg. The English-bred son of Royal Applause scored his biggest wins in the Grade 2 Colonial Turf Cup Stakes on June 20, 2009, and the
Grade 2 Virginia Derby on July 18, 2009. He came first in both the races.
Despite the colt’s sensitive injury, his trainer is optimistic about the colt’s state as he believes that a colt with a similar situation, Tizdejavu, to run exceptionally well.
This is evident in Fox’s statement that said, “he’s thankful the situation wasn’t worse, and stressed again how overwhelmed he was by the professionalism in which it was handled”.
Moreover, Rosario thanked the racing community for the support they extended towards the colt’s injury.
