Multiple choice question about driving?

Do you believe A) lowering the speed limit on roads will reduce accidents even though a lower speed limit can cause more congestion and force cars closer together thus causing more rear end collisions or B) Leave the speed limits alone (providing the surrounding area doesn't require a lower speed) and educate drivers better? Let me explain what I mean by this. Your typical teen gets their permit at 15. I don't know the entire country's requirements for teens but I know by me, the teen needs to complete a certain number of hours on the road before getting their licenses. They also have driver's ed in school and spend maybe an hour a day or even a week with an actual driving teacher for only a couple of weeks. So, most teens learn to driver by their parents. What makes a typical parent a good driving teacher? And I'm not slamming parenting ability. I believe every driver on the road has acquired at least one bad habit if not more in the way they drive which the new teen driver is going to pick up as well. So basically, the are picking up bad habits even before they get their license. Cost and lack of experience by the teen aside, do you think teens should be required to have more time on the road with a licensed driving teacher and have to get experience in all driving conditions (meaning wet, sun, nite or snow)? Would you be willing to pay more to teach your teen to be a good driver or are you willing to accept the basic drivers ed class and assume the job is good enough? Depending on the answers I get, I'll edit this with the reason I'm asking.

  1. I am guessing you're in the U.S.

In Ontario, probably most places actually.  If you go to drivers ed. programs, it'll save alot on insurance.  More than to make it worth it in a year.  So that's usually incentive enough here.

Also the speed limit should be RAISED!  I hate traffic....grrrr.

  2. At a certain point when you keep adding requirements for teenage drivers like courses or classes you are putting some people at a disadvantage. families with one car, families who can't afford driving classes, families with a single parent. For many teenagers driving is a necessity, they may be caring for their siblings while the parents are at work or any number of different scenarios that depend on a 16 year old having a car. So while increasing the standards of drivers ed. seems like a good idea, it is making it harder for the economically disadvantaged to graduate.

Lowering the speed limits is just going to increase the amount of people who speed anyway.

  4. I believe in lowering the mph to increase gas efficiency.

    Max 55mph, everywhere.
