Is it better to get more than 1 goldie. I can't aford a 40 gallon wich is what I would need for 2 goldfish. (I follow the rule 20 gallons per goldie) Would the goldfish still be happy by itself in a 20 gallon tank? (Yes I am talking about fancies)

???

  1. i know everyone has their own 'rules and guidelines' about goldfish and fish keeping in general, but i honestly think two fancy goldfish would be fine in 20 gallons,. just make sure you over filter the tank and you do weekly water changes

  2. It depends on the fish. Some may some not. You will just have to find out when you buy the first one. And i have two goldies in a 20 gallon tank and they like it a lot there is enough room. Hope this helps.

  3. no the rule is, and this is from someone who works at petsmart...2 gallons for every one fish...no matter what kind.

  4. YAY!! someone finally gives a shiiitt abpout the fis!!! ok, well, yes a single fancy ( except pearlscale!! they need 70 gal) will do ok in a 20g alone, but as it matures it rele shuld have a 30 gallon tnak. i no, sucks to hear, but its true.=]

  5. ok. that rule is set up cause people think that they cant live in something smaller. I can say this for fact. I have a goldfish in a 5 gallon. the petstore ask me what size and got mad when i said 5 gallon. He is now about 1 year old... and he is fine. They are worried that they will kill each other cause of the ammonia. I would only have ONE fish in a 5 gallon... and 2 for a 20 gallon.  Being a single fish is ok... since he will make less waste... and not have to fight for food so much. But you can really have 2 fish in the 20 gallon. As for filtering, I would use 2 filters, one on one side and one on the other. and make sure that you clean the gravel eery 2 weeks... this will keep your ammonia down. They wont be as large with 2 in the tank, but they should be fine. ( i know people will say it is not ok... but it should be fine.) get the two of them the same time.

My sister once had 2 in a 10 gallon... and they were fine. But i would not reccommend it. she did alot o work to be sure that they did not kill each other. They also did not have much room to swim considering they were fin to fin most the time. Not fair or a fun life for them...

Yes to answer your question... one should be ok by himself. My one fish lives alone!!! he is fine... he is huge. not as big as he would be if there was 2.!

  6. i think a 20 gallon tank is enough for 2 goldfish
