Multiple lightweight titles holder Juan Diaz announces retirement – Boxing news
The 27-year-old Juan ‘Baby Bull’ Diaz has announced his retirement from boxing in order to join a law school.
The Baby Bull, Diaz, joined the sport 20 years back and won 13 national amateur championships. He also unified World Boxing Association’s, World Boxing Organization’s, International Boxing Federation’s and International Boxing Organization’s world lightweight
titles during his professional career.
Diaz, who recently tied the knot, told the media that it was now time for him to say goodbye to boxing, as his body was getting a lot of wear and tear from it. He added it was the time for him to move on to even better things and for that, law school was
a very good option.
The Mexican-American pugilist, Diaz, who won 35 of his 39 fights including 17 by the way of a knockout, stated he is happy because he is leaving boxing on his own will and that was a good thing.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “The 20 years of boxing started taking its toll on my body. The hunger's there, but the wear and tear on my body told me it's time to move on to bigger and better things. Law school's right around the corner, and
I think that's my future. I want to be one of those good guys, one that retires on time and not because I'm forced out.”
Diaz admitted it was a very tough decision to make, as he could have still fought a lot. He said he might have defended his title one more time.
However, Diaz then expressed his love for boxing and revealed he wants to be remembered as a boxer. He said he knows he was not superstitious but at least people should remember him as someone who had heart of a champion, dedication and hard work for the
sport.
“I want to be remembered as a fighter who had the physique and the body of a regular man who didn't have nothing special, no kind of special talent. But the three things that he had was the heart of a champion, dedication and hard work,” Diaz said.
