Question:

Multiple tap activated abilities (Magic The Gathering)?

Mirrodin's Core, for this example, has 3 tap activated abilities

Tap: Add (1) Mana to your mana pool.

Tap: Put a charge counter on Mirrodin's Core.

Tap, Remove a charge counter from Mirrodin's Core: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.

Is it legal to use two of it's tap activated abilities, or any card with multiple tap abilities, simultaneously?

Example #1: I want to tap Mirrodin's Core for it's ability to produce (1) mana AND to put a charge counter on it.

Example #2: I want to tap Mirrodin's Core for it's ability to produce (1) mana AND to remove a charge counter from it to produce a mana color of my choice (assuming it already had a charge counter).

Example #3: I want to tap Mirrodin's Core for it's ability to produce (1) mana, remove a charge counter from it to produce a mana color of my choice (assuming it already had a charge counter), AND add a charge counter to Mirrodin's Core.

  1. just tap your bum

  2. no is is not legal to use more tap ability because in order to do that you would have to tap the card that meny times and there are seperate abilitys unless it seas that tap this card get "this, this and this" thin that is legal

  3. I will offer a judge’s insight on this issue. It is a very common issue when dealing with newer players.

Think of it this way: Tapping a card and untapping  a card is part of the cost. You are essentially paying a cost in order to get a benefit from that card, whatever it may be. The cost must be paid each and every time you activate one of the abilities, because when you don’t pay costs, you are shoplifting, and in Magic, we prosecute shoplifters. =D

Be aware that this is true every single time. If Mirrodin’s Core had said instead “Whenever this land becomes tapped, …” then, each effect after the tap trigger will trigger, and you will receive the effects in whichever order you like (and incidentally, the Core would not be an uncommon, and it would be worth about $200+.) However, in your case, you can’t tap the core for more than one effect, unless you find a way to untap it and then tap it again.

With the recent Shadowmoor expansion, untapping is introduced to the game the same as tap. You must untap the card in order to receive the benefit. AND YOU CAN’T TAP A TAPPED CREATURE or untap an untapped creature. And you can’t “double tap” or “double untap” a creature because such a thing does not exist in magic.

I’m always happy to see a new player in the game. Remember, everyone was a noob at some point in their lives, and those that are not noobs can help the newbies by explaining whatever they can.

  4. The only way to use a multi-tap ability is if you find someway to untap it.  If you don't have a way, then you cannot use it more than once.  Basically, tapping the permanent is a cost to use the ability.  Since the permanent is already tapped, you cannot tap it again to pay that part of the cost.  If a permanent does not have a tap ability but just a cost ability, you can use it anytime.  For instance:

    http://ww2.wizards.com/Gatherer/CardDeta...

    Skyshroud Elf has

T:  Add G to your mana pool.

1: Add W or R to your mana pool.

Even though it is already tapped, you can still syfen mana into it to make W or R.

On another note, if you play a spell that says tap target creature, you can tap a creature that is already tapped.  If it says tap target untapped creature, then you have to choose a creature that is untapped to tap.  Same goes for Untap target creature.
