In the 59th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), the Deccan Chargers went up against Mumbai Indians in a match that was played at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on May 14, 2011.
After winning the toss, Kumar Sangakkara, the skipper of the Deccan Chargers chose to bat first, hoping to put a humongous total on the board for the mighty batting line-up of Mumbai to chase.
With the presence of some prolific batsmen in Mumbai, any total would have been too small and the only way to put Mumbai under some pressure was to bulk runs right from the word go.
However, the Chargers suffered an early blow as they lost their first wicket on the second delivery, of the first over. The phenomenal Lasith Malinga shattered opener Michael Lumb’s stumps.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sunny-Sohal-c2609 and one down batsman Sangakkara, took on the Mumbai bowlers. The duo displayed some fine stroke playing maneuvers as they rallied against the Mumbai bowling onslaught.
However, before the partnership could be nurtured into something dangerous for Mumbai, it was timely broken in the 18th over as Sangakkara gave a catch to Kieron Pollard off a delivery bowled by medium pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dhawal-Kulkarni-c1367. The skipper went back to the pavilion after scoring 27 runs off 28 deliveries.
An over later, Sohal also lost his wicket while trying to hit Pollard. He ended up giving an easy catch to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Symonds-c44611 at point.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harbhajan-Singh-c61453, after only eight runs on ten deliveries.
This was definitely not why the Chargers had wanted to bat first, wickets were falling frequently.
In the later part of the innings, it was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shikhar-Dhawan-c90019 who added much needed 27 runs in the total tally to help the side post 135 runs on the board.
The target was not formidable, at least not in front of the Mumbai Indians. It was then up to the bowlers to make a match out of the situation.
Mumbai on the other hand must have taken a sigh of relief, hoping to wrap things up soon.
However, they had no idea of what was about to come their way as Sangakkara XI were not going to give up that easily.
In the third over of the Mumbai innings, the Chargers cracked the opening partnership of skipper Sachin Tendulkar and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Aiden-Blizzard-c958 as Duminy clean bowled the latter after the batsman had scored only a run off seven deliveries.
In the very next over, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ishant-Sharma-c64566 joined the party by uprooting Rayudu’s leg-stump. Sachin on the other end was clearly disappointed to see Rayudu walk away after scoring two runs.
Later, none of the batsmen could give a commendable performance but the biggest disappointment was the eight run innings of the hard hitting batsman Symonds, who was removed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Amit-c44003 Mishara as the Australian gave a catch to Sharma.
Mumbai were finally buried for good after their ace batsmen Tendulkar also went walking back to the pavilion after scoring 37 runs off 42 deliveries. He was adjudged leg-before wicket (lbw) on a delivery by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Anand-Rajan-c44173.
It was a devastating sight for the home crowd. Nonetheless, it was too late for Mumbai to save the match and in the end the Deccan Chargers won by ten runs as the home team crumbled on 125.
Mishra was named the man of the match for his phenomenal four overs in which he gave only 18 runs and took a wicket.
