http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gujarat-c787 244 and 337 v Mumbai 447 and 65 - Match drawn
The Ranji Trophy, Group A, match between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 and Gujarat was a dead-rubber by Tuesday, with neither side in a position to win anything at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai.
After ending Monday with 159 for five in their second innings, Gujarat knew that they needed to bat for as long as possible to put a target big enough to hold back their opposition.
It was imperative for them to bat with confidence and without losing too many wickets, or else, this match would have surely ended on Mumbai’s side.
After they got bowled-out for 244 in their second innings, Gujarat were manhandled by a very dominating Mumbai side, as they posted a mammoth score of 447, on the board, to leave Gujarat in a spot of bother.
Gujarat looked weak in their second innings, as they had lost five wickets before the start of the final day.
Overnight batsman, MC Juneja was joined by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Christopher-James-Jordan-c50838 Gandhi on the final day, and under so much pressure this partnership was perhaps the only thing standing between Mumbai’s imminent victory.
The batsmen did not disappoint their fans, as they led their side towards 256 runs by launching an early onslaught.
They ripped apart the bowling attack, hammering the ball all around the park. The fielders were certainly caught by surprise as they were expecting, a rather, mellow start by the batting side instead of a naked aggression.
Finally, this partnership crumbled on the dismissal of Gandhi, who was trapped in front of stumps by Nayar after smashing a brilliant knock of 64 runs.
RV Dhurv was out of colour today, as he fell after scoring only a run off ten deliveries.
Juneja and RB Kalaria then crafted a match saving partnership, taking the score to 322, before Kalaria, who had played a resounding knock of 43 off 39, was dismissed by Kulkarni.
With Juneja perishing after smashing 98 runs, the side faltered by posting 337 runs, giving their opposition 135 runs to win.
Although the target was not huge, Mumbai batted extremely slow in their 27 overs, posting only 65 runs for the loss of one wicket.
