Im 21 weeks and have group B strep. Is it after your first contraction that you have to go into hospital or once the waters have broken? Becuase I knwo you need antibiotics 4 hours before delivery? How long was you in labour for, how long in hospital, and did the infection pass to your baby?

  1. Actually you can get the medication while you are in labour.  Its during the active final stages of labour that they worry.  I have group B strep too they are inducing me today as long as other women can hold off having their babies yesterday I was suppose but all of the sudden there was 8 of them on labour day go fig.  Anyways during labour they will administer the medication need for you to pass to baby.  If you do have concerns about the procedure contact your OB and ask him or her to explain what is the best course of action they are the ones you should really be talking to about anything concerning this infection.   But that is what my OB told me that once labour starts head to the hospital they will administer medication so baby will receive it before they come out.  I will let you know how my labour went sometime this week.  Don't worry your baby is safe especially right now they only caught me being as Strep B three weeks ago so your fortunate.

  2. i rang the hopistal and said my how far apart my contractions were etc and they said come in when your waters have broken, luckily at my midwife appt in the morning they sent me hopsital cos of high blood pressure because it was ten mins between my waters breaking and my little one being born!

ask your midwife for more info and go with instinct i would say!

  3. Don't wait until your water breaks to go to the hospital. Not everyone's water breaks before they go into labor. To be on the safe side and to make sure the antibiotics get into you on time I would go to the hospital when your contractions are 5 minutes apart. Why are they testing you so early for group b strep. I hope they are planning on testing you again when you are closer to your due date. The test is only valid for 4 weeks.

  4. What you are supposed to do probably differs between hospitals. Your hospital should tell you what their policy is when you go for a preadmission visit, or do classes with them.

My hospital asked everyone (GBS or not) to call when we went into labour, but to stay home until labour was well established.

I called the hospital when contractions started to let them know what was happening. A few hours later when my waters broke I called again and they said to come in. Once I got to the hospital I was given the antibiotics every six hours until I had my son - about 35 hours later (labour had slowed down and in the end I was induced).

Although it was a longer time from when my waters broke to when the baby was born than they would normally want for a mother with GBS, he didn't get the infection.

Infection rates without antibiotics are about 1-2%, so I imagine they are far lower with the antibiotics.
