Munaf fined for breaching Code of Conduct, Harbhajan issued warning – Cricket News Update
The altercation between Mumbai’s skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Indians and Deccan Chargers at Vishakhapatnam, ended up costing the captain
and his bowler, with both of them found guilty of breaching the DLF Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct.
While Munaf will be giving up 25% of his match fee, Harbhajan has been officially warned and both players have conceded to a level 1 offence, which according to Article 2.1.3, is showing dissent at an umpire’s decision. Match Referee Graeme La Brooy dealt
with the offenses in question.
During the match, with the Chargers’ skipper Sangakkara on strike during the 13th over, a delivery by Munaf clipped the off-stump before hitting the wicketkeeper’s pads and rebounding to hit the wickets a second time.
This incident raised confusion, with the Mumbai Indians convinced that it was out, while the on-field officials maintained that the ball had not hit the off-stump before, but in fact glanced off the wicketkeeper’s pads and then knocked off the bails.
The umpires turned down the appeal, much to the displeasure of both Munaf and Harbhajan, who engaged in an aggressive verbal altercation with the umpires. The officials were eventually forced to refer the decision to the TV umpire, who gave Sangakkara out.
While the incident proved to be an unpleasant interval in an otherwise thrilling match, the captains of both teams downplayed the incident after the game, claiming that the issue had been resolved.
Clarifying his point, Mumbai captain, Harbhajan said, "We were very sure that the ball had hit the off-stump first. Our point was that if they (umpires) were not sure they should refer the decision to the third umpire early before ruling the batsman not
out.”
"We have moved on. It is closed now. I have checked with my wicketkeeper (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Parthiv-Patel-c2159). The correct decision was taken at the end," said Chargers’ skipper, Sangakkara, after the match.
The Mumbai Indians went on to win the match by 5 wickets, while the Deccan Chargers conceded their second consecutive defeat in the current 5th season of the IPL.
