Munich travel advice needed...?

i am visiting munich with a young family and i heard the area around the Hbf has rent boys and prostitutes. Is this true? Is there anywhere else I should avoid please? Genuine advice is appreciated. Thanks

Well, maybe. But what else would you like to avoid when traveling? I've been to south India a few times, and there were beggars and crippled persons on the streets who tried to make their living, and I actually know a few Europeans who couldn't stand that and flew back.

But don't worry about Munich. The police are on guard there; they once fined me at their fine Hbf (central station) just for sitting on the stairs and sipping from a can of beer. It was the most expensive can of beer I had in my life; it cost me 30 Deutschmarks. I'll never drink beer in Munich again.

even though the area around Hauptbahnhof definitely is not one of the best ones, you don't have to avoid it. You won't see prostitutes on the street there. You'd have to got into the "bars" to see them.

There are no places in Munich you have to avoid, it is probably the safest city in Europe, even at night.

You might want to keep quiet when meeting a lot of football fans after their team has lost a match (usually on Saturdays). But apart from that I can't think of a dangerous situation I've experienced here.

With kids you won't walk around during night anyways...

Marienplatz (shopping area), the Olympic venues and Nymphenberg castle are must sees imho.  For some reason, the areas around train stations in many European cities are rundown.  If you need to change $ (or Sterling) to Euros, make sure you do it Monday-Friday.  I was there on a Saturday and it was VERY hard to find any money changers even in Marienplatz (I finally found one in Woolworth's).  They have ATMs where you can put in US$ bills, but I didn't dare do it bc there was no info on the exchange rates.  I would tend to suggest staying inside at night.  The kids need to get some rest and night time is the perfect time to write postcards, plan the next day's events and to watch some German tv (though I ended up watching Kojak speaking German).

It is often more "rough" around the train stations in many European cities.  However, we have been to Munich many times and have never felt at all afraid.  We took the trains and subways and even during Oktoberfest we always felt safe.  The German people were always friendly and more than willing to help us if we were confused or lost.  I have written some information on Munich that might help you......we lived in Italy for 5 years and we absolutely LOVED visiting Germany so we are trying to create a website regarding European travel.  You can check out the Munich information here:  http://www.travelersguidebook.com/Munich...

I live in Munich and the Hbf does not have any prostitutes anywhere.

Frankfurt central station would be something I would avoid, because I have seen people shooting up drugs there. BUt never in Munich.

The statement, that Munich is probably is one of the safest cites in Europe is true. It is not a problem for girls to be outside by themselves at 4am making their way home after a night out.

And drinking beer on the streets is not illegal as it is in the states. Not sure why anyone would get fined, maybe there was another reason, but I doub't it was alcohol. I have drunk alcohol in public plenty of times without it being a problem.

Bottom line is, I can't really think of any place you really need to avoid.

And the soccer fans are not as bad as described by another person. Sometimes they might get out of hand, but not on the regular.
