Muno/Chow settled for bronze at High Performance Championship – Volleyball news
The pairing of Susannah Muno and London Chow put together a great run in the second annual USA Beach Volleyball High Performance Championships (Beach HPC) and finished the day with a bronze-medal victory. They also emerged as the highest finishers of South
Bay Teams in the High Performance Beach Volleyball Championships on July 17.
The event was held in Hermosa Beach, California from July 14-17. A total of 136 two-player teams from five divisions participated in the campaign and showcased their skills. The USA Volleyball (USAV) was the major supporter of the event, while FIVB rules
and regulations were followed. All matches were played under the rule of ‘Best of Three to 21 points’ with 15-point golden set.
The four-day event reached the final stage of Sunday, July 17. The local duo of Muno and Chow hit the courts on the final day. They were one of the two area teams, who reached the final stage of the tournament. The second area team was comprised of Skyler
Morgan and Samantha Snyder. The former was from Hermosa Beach, while the latter belonged to Manhattan Beach. They appeared in the Under-15 semi-final but remained unsuccessful. They were defeated by Maxine Burke of Dana Point and Georgina Hernandez of San
Juan Capistrano.
In the bronze-medal match, they put up against Sophia Servideo and Victoria Penrod from Florida. The opposition had matters well in hand but Muno/Chow finally found a way to break their rhythm. It was a herculean job but Muno/Chow hit the mark and ousted
their opponents in crucial match by posting 2-1 (21-11, 9-21, and 16-14) win.
Servideo/Penrod built a lead of 14-11 in the opening set but Muno/Chow made a great come-back. The Hermosa Beach residents had the competitive edge of playing in familiar sand and they came out and surpassed their rivals with a 10-point lead in the first
set.
However, the Florida pair bounced back in the game with massive 21-9 win over Muno/Chow. The pressure mounted on the local pair as their opponents looked stronger after the second set victory. Nonetheless, Muno/Chow were destined to capture the match. After
a close fight in the final set of the game, Muno/Chow were named winners as they sent 16-14 on board.
Muno shared her thoughts about the match and stated, “Staying calm and being focused and not losing it was so important in this match. Not letting the match get into our heads helped, too. I’ve always had a problem with staying calm, but this time I managed
to do so.”
Speaking of their overall success in the tournament, she said that they wanted to put a good end to the tournament and they did that by playing whole-heartedly. She concluded, “Obviously, we wanted a better finish, but we played our hearts out and I think
that’s what really matters. We definitely had a lot of fun, too. A lot of girls take it really seriously, and we take it seriously, too, but we try to have fun with it. I’m OK with a bronze.”
