Munster out-half Paul Warwick is pleased to get one over his native Australia
Paul Warwick played a vital role in Munster’s 15-6 victory over Australia at Thomond Park on Tuesday 16 November.
The Munster out-half used his knowledge of the weather conditions to the home side’s advantage and kicked all of Munster’s points in torrid conditions in Limerick.
The Australian-born out-half has become a pivotal player for Munster and he filled in for Ireland out-half Ronan O’Gara, who is preparing for an international match with the All Blacks on Saturday 20 November.
Warwick kicked two drop goals and scored three penalties against a midweek Australian team that failed to adapt to the rain and wind, which had a huge bearing on the match.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Warwick said, “Walking off I guess I probably feel for the Australians, being Australian. But I’m delighted with that performance. It was horrible and it was miserable, but something we’re probably brought up on—well,
me being a Munster man now of course. But the Australians wouldn’t know much about those conditions.”
The Munster out-half praised the forward pack who were forced to take on Australia minus a number of their international contingent, which includes David Wallace, Denis Leamy, John Hayes, Mick O’Driscoll and Donnacha O’Callaghan.
“For us coming in at half-time level was huge. In the second half we needed to control the ball and we did. The amount of work our forwards did—I ’m sure we’ll get the stats during the week—but they won that game for us hands down, and the amount of young
guys in that pack too, that’s what makes it so impressive.”
However, Australian captain Berrick Barnes blamed the weather for his team’s defeat. “You’d be more worried about catching a cold than the ball out there,” Barnes joked.
