Murder statistics for the UK?

I`ve been trying to find a web site that gives the number of murders per year in the UK from 1950 to the present day. Anyone know?

Good question - the best I can find is http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa... but that doesn't go back far enough. Part of the problem is that there is no central police registry of murders (although they have been talking about it for some time). A Freeddom of Information application to the Home Office should work, if you're willing to try it.
