well first of all the "Germans" weren't the only once their were Norwegians some jew to and scandinavians and a whole lot more but the reason for hitler to be blamed  is because this on person told him to gte rid of the jews so he did the best he could and when they weren't dieing fast enough they killed them burned them and gassed them. so with out hitler no of that would of happened and most of the time when hitler would give orders he was very high on what they call his cocktail medicine

Martin Luther is the German born father of the Protestant religion. He was also a virulent anti Semite. Hitler's Mein Kampf was a warmed over rehash of the anti Jewish diatribe of Martin Luther's "On the Jews and their lies" written 300 years before the n***s. The powerful German elite found intellectual justification for their hatred of Jews via the writings of men such as Martin Heidegger, Adolf Lanz von Liebenfels, Guido von List, Georg von Schönerer, and Alfred Rosenberg. The German poor found prosperous Jews an easy scapegoat for their horrible condition. Hatred of Jews was a cancerous tumor deeply embedded within the collective psyche of the German people. Hitler was simply the catalyst who caused it to metastasize.

'murderous hatred' is a bit strong of a word to apply to 'most Germans' but i totally see what you're trying to say! People do tend to blame Hitler for everything but a lot of German people didn't like Jews. More for jealous reasons (Jewish Businessmen often hadn't suffered as badly from the economic effects on Germany - see the 'stab in the back' stuff) and that a lot of Germans (wrongly) blamed the Jews for all their problems, particularly in the depression, not that anti-semitism doesn't exist further back.

All Germans weren't 'brainwashed' or scared into behaving by Hitler alone. Let's not forget that a huge proportion of people turned into the Gestapo were turned in by their 'friends' and neighbours.

I don't think Historians scapegoat Hitler. They do it far less than the general public. People on YA often just yell 'n**i' when you see a question like this but it's a more accurate reflection than saying Hitler was 'a retarded-spawn-of-satan-brainwashed-ever...

People scapegoat Hitler because after seeing what happened in the Holocaust they're embarrased of what they might have thought or done, however small and insignificant their prejudice might have been, so they blame it on Hitler rather than admit a mistake. I don't blame them, anybody who admitted to being slightly antisemitic after the Holocaust would be eaten alive by anybody in their right mind.

People pin all kinds of traits to Hitler and he's evolved into some kind of superhuman force. Hitler couldn't have done it all himself, yes he had twisted and warped ideas and he encouraged people to thinkt he same way but the foundation was already there. One person can't start a war and make it last for years by himself. Hitler had support! People voted for him!

You mention two extreme views, the truth is clearly somewhere in between. I mean I don't think that "most Germans" had "murderous hatred" for Jews, but we know that there was widespread antisemitism in Germany and also other countries and there were many n***s, so definitely it wasn't just Hitler. As far as I know the only historian who said that "most Germans" wanted to kill the Jews was Daniel Goldhagen in his book Hitler's Willing Executioners which was much criticized by other historians, on the other hand I don't know of any historian who seriously said that Hitler alone was to blame. I do read books written by historians about the Holocaust and there are different views, but to some extend they all agree that there was at least a certain number of Germans who were more or less convinced or involved in Nazism, and there are also historians who wrote about antisemitism and lack of help for the persecuted Jews in different countries occupied by n**i Germany.  

The truth is not so simple black and white that all Germans were either good or bad, and it's hard to know what convictions people had then as they couldn't express them freely anyway.

Some people were prejudiced against Jews. Many were not. But people WERE looking for a scapegoat for how bad things were going for the country economically after the first world war. The real problem was the economic sanctions England, France and Italy made Germany put up with. But Hitler provided an easier scapegoat. The result?   Six million men, women and children murdered.

Hitler was the one who corrupted the minds of all the people. He was convincing in making it seems like the Jews were the cause of all the country's (and the world's) problems.

Whether you like Hitler or not, you have to admit that he was an amazing speaker and had the power to control his audience into making them believe whatever he said.

Without Hitler's leadership and the National Socialist German Worker's Party's control of the state and its resources, it is unlikely that anyone in Germany at the time could have turned their hatred of the communists and Jews into any form of a murderous pogrom.

Please provide references when you refer to "most Germans" and "historians," otherwise your question may appear to be rant in the form of a question.

On January 30, 1933, President Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor of Germany.

After a series of criminal acts of Hitler's followers Hitler suspended the German constitution and became a dictator. The rest is well known.

For their part, the German people quickly accepted the new order of things.

In his book "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" William Shirer wrote:

"The overwhelming majority of Germans did not seem to mind that their personal freedom had been taken away, that so much of culture had been destroyed and replaced with a mindless barbarism, or that their life and work had become regimented to a degree never before experienced even by a people accustomed for generations to a great deal of regimentation.... The n**i terror in the early years affected the lives of relatively few Germans and a newly arrived observer was somewhat surprised to see that the people of this country did not seem to feel that they were being cowed.... On the contrary, they supported it with genuine enthusiasm. Somehow it imbued them with a new hope and a new confidence and an astonishing faith in the future of their country. "
