Murphy and Wynn dominate Women’s and Men’s 400m IM: 2011 Irish Long Course National Championships
Grainne Murphy and Niall Wynn win the preliminary rounds of 400m IM in their respective categories on day two of the 2011 Irish Long Course National Championships. Murphy dominated the Women’s event whereas Wynn conquered the Men’s 400m Individual Medley
(IM).
Murphy of LIMK occupied the fastest qualification spot by out-touching her member with a timing of 4:55.48 minutes. Shani Stallard of NRS and Niamh O’ Sullivan followed her in the final, clocking a time of 5:01.56 and 5:02.78 minutes, respectively.
LEA’s Sycerika McMahon, who claimed the gold medals of 200m freestyle and 200m butterfly, touched the wall in a time of 5:05.81 minutes for fourth fastest qualification. Therese Corry of PORT and Niamh Bryson of TEMP followed her in the final as the fifth
and sixth fastest swimmer, posting a time of 5:17.41 and 5:17.61 minutes, respectively.
GAL’s Saoirse McGrath and TEMP’s Dayna Clegg managed to touch the wall for the seventh and eighth position with a timing of 5:18.41 and 5:24.69 minutes, respectively.
In the Men’s corner, equivalent event was dominated by ST’s Niall Wynn, who earned the fastest qualification spot in a time of 4:32.61 minutes and was followed by PCS-GER’s Paul Wudtke and CBAR’s Nicholas Quinn, who touched the wall in 4:35.61 and 4:40.29
minutes for the second and third spot, respectively.
Wynn became the top contender for the fastest qualification in the second lap when he gained lead from Wudtke. Then, he presented his aggressive swimming throughout the event and touched the wall three seconds ahead of Wudtke. Similarly, Wudkte managed a
five-second lead from Quinn and touched the wall second.
Quinn was followed by LEA’s Conor Donnelly and ALS’s Sean O’ Brien, who touched the wall for fourth and fifth, clocking a time of 4:42.01 and 4:44.11 minutes. Sixth fastest qualification spot was secured by ST’s Philip Duffy with a timing of 4:44.89 minutes.
These swimmers will once again meet each other in the final of their respective events, where the swimmers clocking a time under FINA time qualification standard will be ensured their places for 2011 World Championships in Shanghai.
