Murray Brothers lose to Melzer/Peya in the first round – London Olympics
Home favourites, Andy Murray and Jamie Murray, gave a disappointing performance, as they lost to Jurgen Melzer and Alexander Peya of Austria in three sets 7-5, 6-7(6), 5-7 in the first round of the doubles category at the London
Olympics on Saturday.
It took Melzer and Peya two hours and 23 minutes to beat the British team in a close match.
Melzer/Peya and the Murrays held their serves in the first 11 games and took the score to 6-5 in favour of the formers. The British struck at that moment and grabbed the opener at 7-5.
In the second set, none of the two teams succeeded in claiming a breakthrough, squaring off the score at 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. Melzer and Peya won four of the first five points to move ahead 4-1 but Andy and Jamie came
back to level the score at 6-6. However, their efforts proved fruitless, as the Austrians captured two back-to-back points, winning it 7-6(6).
Murray brother made a good start in the decider, striking in the very first game and holding their following serve to gain a 2-0 lead. Though, Melzer and Peya broke back in the fourth to even out the proceedings at 2-2. The Brits
hit a blow to their opponents again in the seventh game but were unable to consolidate on it, levelling the score at 4-4. Serving to stay in the match at 5-6, Murrays failed to hold and threw away the set 5-7.
In the post match press conference, Andy said, "It was tough, we played well. We were a break up twice in the third set. We had enough chances to win the match, each time we got the break we got broken straight back so it was tough."
The younger brother thanked the crowd for their support by saying, "They did a great job. They were really loud from the first point to the last. They helped a lot, you don't always get that for doubles matches and it was a really
nice atmosphere to play in. I hope they enjoyed the match."
The third seed will take on the world number 26, Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, in the first round of the singles event.
He added, "I will try and get prepared and try and do all of the recovery stuff. I will get an early night and get myself ready for tomorrow."
After their 10 previous meetings, Murray leads Wawrinka 6-4 in the head to head record.
