Murray State Volleyball Squad drops a 3-0 decision to Evansville
The Purple Aces (University of Evansville) Girls’ Volleyball Team dominated over the Racers (Murray State) on Tuesday, September 6 by 3-0. The Racer Arena in Murray, Kentucky, hosted the thrilling performance of the two well-known teams in the NCAA. It was
the 2011 Season opener and the home team could not profit from the advantage of playing in familiar conditions. The Aces performed amazingly well and finished the game with a final score of 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, and 25-23).
Junior Cassy Woolverton enjoyed great form in the match and tallied 16 kills with a .342 hitting percentage. Equally talented and proficient, Teresa Krog, also went into double digits as she was credited with 14 kills. Lia Havili was highlighted for her
19 digs and 16 assists in the match.
The Evansville squad opened the game on strong footing and served with accuracy. They managed to land the ball in the targeted areas and clipped four consecutive points. On the other side of the net, Racers faced trouble in covering the court. The ball frequently
moved through their legs and a few camp-fires worsened the situation for them. Aces took full advantage of the nervousness of their opponents and added more points. They remained remarkably consistent and covered the length of the opening set with a fair lead
of nine points. the first set was closed at 25-16 as the Aces grabbed a win.
The success in the first set gave a good push to Evansville and they pulled ahead early. The home squad of Murray State struggled to catch up with the speed of their rivals. They came up with different strategy in the second set and made the set a close
one. Despite the fact that the Purple Aces had a good grip on the ball, the Racers managed to take the score of 13-12. In the meanwhile, Aces started the heavy strike and spiked the ball hard. They tried to quickly reach the set points. Their effort was commendable
but the Aces pushed them behind with 25-22 win in the second set.
The third set was a tough battle for both sides. Murray State team had the only chance to save the game but the Evansville side was prepared to put an end to the tussle. The first tie of scores in third set was created at 14-all. As the game progressed and
inched its way to a close, the score once again tied at 23-23. The Purple Aces managed a perfect kill and clinched success in the third straight set 25-23.
In the next run, Murray State Volleyball Team is scheduled to take part in the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale at the weekend. The Racers will first take on the hosts Southern Illinois on Friday, September 9. The next day, they will play two matches against
Memphis and Green Bay.
