Murray Topples Federer in Toronto Masters championship
Britain’s Andy Murray continued his rich vein of form as he toppled Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer in the final match of the Toronto Masters tennis championship. The defending champion was in top gear and succeeded in becoming the second man after Andre Agassi to successfully defend his title at the championship.
The final score line was 7-5, 7-5 in favor of the Brit. The start of the match was delayed by fifteen minutes due to a short spurt of rain that caused the players to head back to the locker room, keeping the crowd waiting with bated breath.  Throughout the match, Murray capitalized on the sluggishness of Federer who looked exhausted by playing two punishing three-set matches. Murray kept his grip on the match ensuring that he wins vital breaks in the two sets as he cruised to an important win.
This thumping victory has reaffirmed Andy Murray’s status as one of the red-hot favorites for the final grand slam of this year’s U.S. Open. Murray showed exemplary form throughout the week-long championship and disposed off the top two world ranking players’ en-route to his victory. In the semi-finals he had swept aside Spanish world number one Rafael Nadal.
After the title match a beaming Murray claimed that he was upbeat for the US Open and that his victory at Toronto has put him in the right frame of mind. Murray told reporters, “I’ve played him (Roger Federer) two or three times during final matches, so it was good that I won here today. Three good results in a row against Nalbandian, Rafael and Roger will give me confidence for the next week."He added that the U.S Open was his real target and he was fully focused on a win there."The US Open is obviously the main goal, but Toronto was a good start. I played five days in a row from Wednesday -- all of the matches right in the heat of day -- so it was good for me physically."
On the other hand, Federer acknowledged that his opponent was that day’s better player who could prove to be a major threat at the New York’s Flushing meadows which is the venue for US Open."Andy played well and he deserved the win. It could have ended much earlier”. However, Federer recalled that he had clawed back in the quarter-finals against Tomas Berdych, and thus had not thrown in the towel till the very end. He added, “Obviously, I'm a little tired, but it's been a good week and I'm happy with my game”.
