  1. I would suggest avoiding Sondheim, first of all.  Many accompanists cannot handle it, or worse, have a different interpretation than you.  So stay away from "Sweeney"!

As a director, I find a lot of Kander & Ebb good for Altos in auditions, as it shows off a lot of attitude as well as voice.  You have to act those songs, and you can belt, but they are still challenging.  So I'd look seriously at "Don't Tell Mama" or "Maybe This Time" from Cabaret .  Another idea might be "Easy to be Hard" from Hair (beautiful song).

Free sheet music usually isn't legal, so I will refrain from suggesting places.  However, I'm sure if you are good at google'ing you can find these things.

  2. Your Daddy's Son- Ragtime

    Defying Gravity- Wicked

    The Wizard and I- Wicked

The Past Is Another Land- Aida

    I Know The Truth-Aida

    Gimme Gimme- Thoroughly Modern Millie

I Don't Know How To Love Him- Jesus Christ Superstar

Can't Get a Man With a Gun- Annie Get Your Gun

    Roxie-Chicago

  3. There are several good alto songs that you could do.  "Worst Pies in London" from Sweeney Todd.  "Look to the Rainbow" from Finian's Rainbow, "Memory" from Cats, "Adelaide's Lament", "Never, Never Land" from Peter Pan, "Don't Rain on my Parade" from Funny Girl.  There are many others.  You should look for the "Singer's Musical Anthology" books.  You can get them through Hal Leonard.
